Dengue Fever Control

1.    What is Dengue?

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus which is spread through aedes mosquito bites. There are approximately more than 100 million dengue fever cases worldwide each year.

2.    How to know if someone is infected with dengue fever?

Patient will experience the following signs and symptoms 5-6 days after being bitten by an aedes mosquito carrying a dengue virus :-
•    High fever
•    Headache
•    Spinal pain
•    Pain at the joints
•    Nausea and vomitting
•    Eye pain
•    Rashes

3.    What could happen if a patient fails to receive prompt treatment?

A patient could experience haemorrhagic dengue fever which could lead to death.

4.    Breeding Grounds for Aedes Mosquitoes Are As Follows :-

Indoor : Flower vase, refrigerator excess water trap tray, toilet flushing cistern, ant trap, flower pot, water tank, and other forms of water storage container.

Outdoor : Unused tyres, bottles, pails, roof gutter, tree fronds, broken glass, coconut shell, cocoa husk, dead tree stump, and other forms of container that could hold stagnant water.

5.    How to prevent breeding of Aedes mosquitoes?

•    Ensure that stagnant water container is removed in a proper manner.
•    Cover all forms of water storage container or add a correct mixture of temephos.
•    Thoroughly clean water storage container and replace water once a week.
•    Thoroughly clean flower vase and replace water once a week.
•    Check roof gutter once in a week and ensure no signs of stagnant water.
•    Eradicate aedes mosquitoes using aerosol insecticide.
•    Cooperate with health personnel by leaving the door open during fogging works.
•    Residents are advised to check that both indoor and outdoor surrounding areas are clean and free from breeding of aedes mosquitoes at least once a week. Residents experiencing fever should seek medical attention immediately.

ENSURE THAT BULKY LITTER SUCH AS PLASTIC WATER CONTAINERS, CANVASES, FLOWER VASES, BOTTLES, UNUSED TYRES, AND OTHERS ARE DISPOSED OF IN A PROPER MANNER AS IT MAY RESULT IN BREEDING OF AEDES MOSQUITOES. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW AND A COMPOUND OR PENALTY MAY BE IMPOSED FOR SUCH AN OFFENCE. PLEASE CONTACT AUTHORISED CLEANERS SUCH AS SWM ENV.
